Tips for Ordering a Pet Portrait

Picking A Photo

Picking a photo is the first step in getting an amazing pastel portrait of your pet. Choosing a photo can be hard, but here are some tips to help pick the perfect one:

  1. Photos that show the full front or full side of the pets face work best (use our prior work for examples).
  2. The clearer the photo, the better!
  3. The larger the photo, the cleaner the portrait will be, and often, the quicker it can be completed.
  4. Bright photos with high contrast deliver the best results.

Framing

Unless requested, initial quotes don’t include framing. It is highly recommended to have your portrait professionally framed to avoid any damage to the pastels. Although we seal all our portraits with professional fixative, pastels are a very soft medium and can still smudge from excessive handling. Here are some framing suggestions:

  1. We can have your portrait custom framed with Buffalo Picture Frame, our preferred framing provider, starting at $99.
  2. You can take your portrait to any custom framing provider, but be sure to make them aware these are pastels and need to be framed accordingly.
  3. We typically work with 18” x 24” canvas - you can buy a store-bought frame, however you want to be sure the frame has raised glass/spacers. If the glass touches the portrait, it can permanently smudge the pastels and ruin the portrait.

TIMING

It’s never too early to order a pastel pet. Although we work to complete portraits quickly, complexities of the photo and adjustments/corrections to meet your preference can take additional time. Here are some tips for planning the timing of your portrait:

  1. Be sure to tell us any deadlines or time frames so we can plan accordingly - we are happy to accommodate rush portraits if needed.
  2. Allow time for completion of the portrait (2-3 weeks) and framing (1-2 weeks).
